On Wednesday night my friend Siobhan and I attended the Gorillaz gig at Rogers Stadium. The show was musically and visually amazing and we had an awesome night getting lost in the venue’s atmosphere.
For those unfamiliar, the band Gorillaz was founded in 2001 by Blur’s Damon Albarn and British cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. Hewlett created an encompassing virtual world for the band, full of strange environments and charmingly flawed characters. Gorillaz is widely recognised as being one of the first, and definitely most successful virtual bands ever, with an extensive online presence and accompanying music videos all taking place in Hewlett’s twisted world.
During the current world tour entitled Escape to Plastic Beach audiences are treated to not only live music and performance but also stunning backdrop video of the Gorillaz’ virtual existence throughout the set.
My Favourite of the night was the animation during Dirty Harry, which involved a choir of incompetent children singing along to the song >>
What I find special about Hewlett’s characters is how all of them have their own quirkily-delinquent personalities that are expressed so effectively. The characters of the band members are featured in almost every video that’s been released since 2001 and it’s hard not to feel for them as if they were flesh and blood humans.
Below are a few of my favourite images and videos of the virtual Gorillaz, enjoy >>

Check out the band’s official website for more time-wasting fun including a procrasti-tastic online game.
