Forget Me Not

I’ve stumbled upon a beautiful  line of silk scarves created by a UK artist known as ‘Coco"’.

The prints featured on the Forget Me Not scarves are collage based, using images of nature, astrology and the female figure. Check it out >>

There are currently no stockists listed on their website for Canada, but there are a few online stores to order from (Off the Runway has the best deals).

Almost seems a waste to wrap these pieces up and spoil their artistic appeal, perhaps better suited to be pinned on the wall?

Retailer’s Seasonal Playlists

As a self-proclaimed audiophile, it always amazes me how apparent the lack of effort is that retailers put into the music they play in their stores. Particularly during this holiday season it seems there has been some sort of standard government-issued playlist that has been distributed throughout every store I’ve visited. What’s up, Vancouver?

Even at the small boutiques where they are able to control their personal store identity over somewhere like Banana Republic or Aritzia, they are still playing the same cookie-cutter cliché audio-vomit that everyone else has got on repeat. Bah-Humbug!

Good music should create a sense of individualism and uniqueness in the atmosphere of a store. Retailers should engage visitors with all five senses - character is more interesting, so why would you want to be a clone? Isn’t that why you opened your own store to begin with? Go manage a Gap, why don’t you.

Here are a few festive choices that I plan to play when I have partial control over my future store stereo (after I get off of my high horse, of course) >>

Actors Acting

Since Oscar season is in full swing, I have been succumbed into films and nominations and such for the upcoming show. A friend of mine posted this really great link to the New York Times where actors were asked to capture classic screen types in these short scenes directed by Solve Sundsbo with music by Owen Pallett. In conclusion, a masterful collection of 14 actors truly..acting.

I love this type of work-so simple and poignant. And it's all in black in white to boot. With classical music. Who just went bananas....Marlon did. Happy Holidays movie go-ers!

Can you figure out which screen types each person is playing?

PS, Notice that most of them are Golden Globe and Oscar contenders...man, did NYT get it right. Bravo!

How To Make a Christmas Sweater in 10 Easy Steps

What is it, four days ‘till Christmas? Brill! What better way to get in the holiday spirit than to destroy a perfectly good sweater so you can only wear it once a year. Here’s how it’s done, folks >>

Step 1. Choose an appropriate playlist

Bingooo

Step 2. Find a sweater that you don’t really wear anyway

Step 3. Scrounge up any fabric scraps, old clothes or scarves that could pass for festive

Step 4. Mark and cut out all of the pieces you’ll need for the decoration

Step 5. Don’t forget, it’s not a Christmas Sweater without a cliché slogan

Step 6. Use markers to add details. Jolly!

Step 7. Sew the smaller pieces together first, before attaching anything to the sweater (if you don’t have a sewing machine, use needle and thread, staples, or saliva)

IMG_2192

Step 8. Pin the pieces on the sweater (putting something thick like a magazine inside the sweater makes it easy)

Step 9. Sew that shit!

High Five Sundays! (and we're baaaaaaack)

We're back! And in tradition, since it's Sunday, its time for HFS!
My top 5 for this week is....

THE TOP 5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED A UNION SUIT (AKA LONG JOHNS.)

5. "Excuse me, are you Spiderman?"
Who are these two? We don't know. All we know is that they've embraced
the life of a superhero.
Once a year, men can dress up as their favourite superheroes and put on a "onesie" without being ridiculed. Rejoice, fellow nerds - long johns can make you feel just as super. Choose from your favourite colors and be twelve again. Isn't what makes a superhero his one piece costume anyway?

4. "My name is __________. Oh, I'm wearing a Union Suit."

Layer that mother up and go to the bar. It's a great icebreaker, I'm sure of it. Can you honestly say you've worn a "union suit" before without anyone asking what it was? Hell, did you even know it was called a "union suit"?

3. "Butt." "But what?" "Your butt!"

Now when you go to the toilet, your legs dont have to suffer that cold and brisk feeling! With the butt flap for your most easiest conveniece, you can keep your legs warm and toasty while getting your "shit" done!

2. "They're playful like I am!"

I'm so happy!
There are so many variations to choose from! You can have a short romper style for women (and men, too...), a sleeveless one if you find yourself feeling too stuffy, a multi-colored tye dyed one to keep you psyched out, and one with built in slippers!

1. " Yes, my Union Suit is warmer than your Snuggie..."

True Story.

None of these pictures are ours. Thank you random strangers and your pictures with your Suit's!

Happy Holidays!

O’Mast Trailer

A documentary is currently being made about traditional Neopolitan tailoring. I found the link on my favourite blog isaaclikes today and decided to pass it on >>

O'MAST from Kid Dandy on Vimeo.

“There is no craft you can make without passion. If you are are a shoemaker, a tailor, a shirtmaker, a barber, any kind of craft, you need to have passion.”

I’m envious of anyone who has found a job in the creative industries that they are passionate about. I hope myself and the rest of my graduating class at AIV will be able to experience that next year!

Until then, bring on the Christmas break – t-minus 12 days and 11 (I think) final projects, presentations, and exams. Sigh!

Is She...or Isn't He?

Meet Andrej Pejic, the Croatian and Serbian offering to the fashion world from Australia. Being at a ripe age of 19 years old, Andrej is making headlines all over the fashion industry with the poutiest lip and platinum blonde hair that makes forgetting this unique beauty very hard to do. In a interview, Andrej says that "people in the industry get bored easily especially now that everything has been done and every so often they need new toys to play with."

"I think women today are sick of seeing underdeveloped teenagers modeling their clothes. They want a real woman with hips and thighs. Hahaha! But really I think that people in the industry get bored easily especially now that everything has been “done“ and every so often they need new toys to play with."

In fighting form, Pejic proves that the new toy to play with...is him.

Me, I have this enormous respect for androgyny. Hell, my first post was about how much I love Tilda Swinton! With Andrej, I literally could not believe it until I looked a little closer at his features. He has the features of a man...but there's something there that's undeniably feminine. Kudos and props to a fellow 19 year old who's embracing what he's given. I am a fan of him, for sure, but I do have one issue.

I think everyone needs to tone it down a little bit. Dress him in a dress, put heels on him for all I care, but give him something else to work with. Yeah, it's cool, he's different...so what's next? Don't let the androgyny make him it's bitch, let the androgyny be his.

"When I'm gone they'll probably say: What was that?"

Here is a cool shoot of his:

cool!
"How often does it happen that people think you're a girl?
Oh all the time! Straight men have been hitting on me since I was eight years old"

I say cut his hair. Let's see what else he can do.
I'm routin' for you, buddy!
