The Confusing World of Silk Scarves

2009-0370final

My mum used to collect silk scarves when she went overseas, and over the years I have been the receiver of a few hand-me-downs from her stash.

For some reason though and as clever as I am, I’ve never been able to rock those square pieces of fabric in a way that I was happy with. I either felt like I was wearing a surgical bandage around my head, or that I was channelling a career as a flight attendant in the 1960s.

But I’ve recently gained a new found interest in silk scarves after visiting the Hermès flagship boutique in Vancouver about a month ago. As part of a student seminar held by the store, I was given a look book containing a campaign that revolved around young people in various parts of the world fashioning Hermès’ scarves in creative ways.

The shoot is extremely Sartorialist / Trend Hunter inspired and is obviously targeted at what Hermès hopes to be their new generation of customers (No coincidence they invited all those fashion schools for an “information evening”). Their marketing ploy lacks a certain subtlety, but hey I got a free catalogue and now I look at those hand-me-down scarves in a whole new way.

Below are my picks from the Hermès campaign, maybe you’ll be inspired to give some of them a try >>
