I came across this campaign through newly discovered mega-cool website Free / Man (its Vancouver connection makes it even cooler). In celebration of 40 years in business, Starbucks commissioned photographers Brian Ferry and Stephanie Congdon Barnes to take on this new hipster-happy image series that’s been running in print in the US recently.
On an artistic level - I love the cropped detail and soft, natural lighting. On an advertising and marketing level – It seems that Starbucks is slowly shifting away from it’s associations with tiny tiny celebrities carrying around venti venti take-out mugs and trying harder to persuade every-day people that they are just like the quaint and bohemian coffee shop in your local ‘hood and not in-fact one of the biggest super brands in the world.
Either way – I’m not ashamed to admit I am a Starbucks fan, and this campaign doesn’t change that. Favourite shots are below >
Full series can be found on Brian Ferry’s website.
